The Bootlegger, a retro-chic bar inspired by America’s underground drinking movement during Prohibition, is simply bold, beautiful and bursting with flavour. Located in Monument, this sumptuous Speakeasy is tucked away down Lime Street, the first time around we actually missed the sign, and it definitely evokes all the style, sophistication and undeniable sexiness of the roaring twenties.
As you descend the flight of steps to this luxurious basement lounge you feel like you’re travelling back in time, so much so that the city above seems a million miles away. The Bootlegger prides itself on having retained the best bits of the era, including period decor, exposed brickwork and copper lighting. Elegant photographs from this dark, decadent age line the walls and the atmosphere feels both heavy with secrets and promises of illicit fun.
The drinks menu is pretty exciting and features lots of delicious, expertly mixed cocktails. Classic cocktails are stylishly reinvented while signature creations are sure to become a firm favourite. Why not try The Informant, a coffee-based cocktail? Or the Booze Hound, complete with lashings of Bacardi? Another delicious sounding option is Cariel & Stolichnaya Vanilla Vodka combined to make Dizzy with the Dame.
I became rather fond of a honey flavoured tipple, which came in a mason jar followed by a glass, or two, of Prosecco served in gorgeous crystal glassware. A light-bites food menu also accompanies the extensive liquor collection providing cold cut platters, salted snacks, olives and cheese plates. Everything here really looks the part, from the working Prohibition era cash registers to crystal decanters and original cocktail shakers.
This is truly a place to sit back, relax and have fun. Not only is there is a great atmosphere but it’s perfect for catching up with friends, enjoying after work drinks as well as being a wonderful spot for date night. The enchanting lighting and decor alone make it ideal for treating that special someone. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Speakeasy without any toe tapping tunes, Jazz, Blues and Sing-A-Longs were very popular back then, and the bill this time around is no different. Weekly live music performances will include a diverse, colourful lineup that emulates classic rhythms from the era.
If you’re looking for something that’s different to the ten-a-penny wine bars, hipster hangouts and coffee clubs that seem to have invaded London, get yourself down to The Bootlegger because I promise that you won’t be disappointed. This sassy, sexy Speakeasy has thrown the rulebook out the window, creating an enticing experience where the past meets the present in a whirl of genteel glitz and glamour.
The Bootlegger is open now Mon-Fri and available for private hire Sat-Sun
