Pho & Bun Review

Where to eat Vietnamese food in London.

I’d heard about Pho & Bun a lot so I was really excited visit and try it out for myself. The restaurant is located on Shaftesbury Avenue, in the middle of Leicester Square/China Town and Soho. It is within walking distance from Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and even Oxford Circus underground stations.

You could easily miss the restaurant as a it was a bit smaller than I imagined but very cosy and the atmosphere was fantastic. We visited on a Friday evening and the restaurant was buzzing and every table was filled. We received such a lovely welcome, Pho & Bun is warm and intimate and it feels very homely.

The menu is simple but with a huge variety of dishes. We weren’t sure what to to start with so we shared the Pho & Bun platter (£13.95). The platter includes a selection of dishes so you can get a real Vietnamese feast. The platter featured Prawn and Tofu summer rolls, Spring roll pork & crab, Chilli squid and Mango salad. As a huge peanut butter fan I fell in love with the peanut sauce that came with the platter so covered everything in it!

Days before our visit I had just arrived back from Asia so decided to show off my new chopstick skills. Even though this was quite difficult with the summer rolls and I made a little bit of a mess, I succeeded!

The mango salad was so fresh and an amazing explosion of fruity flavours. It was a great contrast against the pork & crab spring rolls covered in peanut sauce. The spring rolls were bursting with flavour and full with a generous amount of meat.

For the main course we shared a few dishes which included the best sweet potato fries I have ever had. You can order them as side of £2.95 and they come with the most delicious chilli mayonnaise.

We shared two Steamed bao burgers including the BBQ honey belly pork with fried shallot, apple and chilli mayo (£7.50) and Crispy tiger prawn with pineapple, house pickle and wasabi mayo (£7.50).

This was the first time I’d tried a bao bun burger. As they are becoming quite a big trend in London so I’ve been dying to try one for so long.

The buns were light and fluffy with a slight sweet taste and I prefered them so much more compared to a usual burger bun. The belly pork bun was by far my favourite with juicy pork covered in a sweet honey glaze creating the perfect contrast between sweet and savoury.

I now understand the London’s bao bun obsession!

We also shared the Com Thit Nutong (£8.95) which was filled to the brim with Honey glazed BBQ pork with salad and Vermicelli. I was SO happy to have another portion of their BBQ pork after finishing the bao bun. The pork was slightly smokey but covered in this sweet glaze which was just so so good. The flavour balances were incredible.

After finishing our meal we felt full and satisfied with good quality food. Then our wine glasses were topped up again…it was an ideal evening!

They made sure that there wasn’t an empty glass in the house.

We weren’t up for dessert but they insisted so of course we obliged… 😉

We shared two desserts, Coconut snow with Vietnamese iced coffee and the Pandan and coconut panna cotta with peanut and pineapple salsa.

I was wary of the Coconut snow as I am not a huge coffee fan but it just proves that you should always step out of your comfort zone as it was incredible! Despite being really full I lapped this up. It was so refreshing and light and really helped freshen my palate – it is must-have after a hearty meal at Pho & Bun.

This part of town may not be popular with foodies due to bad rep China Town often gets but Pho & Bun is somewhere you must visit. It is completely different to any of its neighbours. It’s a cute and cosy foodie hideaway with some of the best Vietnamese food in the city.
