Herman Ze German Fitzrovia
German cuisine isn’t usually top of my list when searching for somewhere to eat, but Herman Ze German showed me why it should be…
Last Sunday evening we made our way to Fitzrovia for dinner at the Charlotte Street Herman Ze German branch (they also have branches in Charing Cross and Soho).
I loved all of the quirky German signs and neon lights around the place, I felt like I had suddenly transported to Berlin. My favourites included ‘Ze Sink’ (above the sink obviously) and ‘Our Wurst is Ze Best!’ signs.
We were shown to our bright orange table and given menus with pens. Our server explained the dishes to us and then we simply ticked off what we wanted to get.
I think we got a bit tick happy….
Our dishes arrived with good speed on paper lined plates.
Herman Ze German recently launched a cocktail menu, new biers and a new dish – The Bratmeister.
We tried the new Bratmeister, a dish which sounded like it was made for me! Bratwurst in a roll covered in roast vegetables, feta cheese and homemade veal gravy with a side of fries (£8.95). I’m a feta cheese addict so was really excited to try this and it didn’t let me down!! It’s a great unique twist on the traditional German Bratwurst. (Don’t do what I did and wear lipstick, as it will be all over your face and food instead of your lips).
Karl ordered the chicken schnitzel which was really decent too. I had to sample it of course for review purposes 😉
It was juicy and flavoursome and came with a bowl of crispy fries and a side salad (to lessen the guilt).
We ordered a side dish of traditional Sauerkraut to enjoy with our mains. Juicy and fresh and went down well with the schnitzel and bratwurst.
We also shared the super fries smothered in cheese and chilli which were incredible. (My only complaint is that there should be more chilli and cheese layers to make this dish even more dreamy!)
To wash down this feast I ordered the Cherry Bomb cocktail from the new cocktail menu. This cocktail is described a fizzy flight through Herman’s home in the Black Forest. This delicious concoction is a mix Fritz-Cherry and chocolate liqueur.
The Charlotte Street branch has a great basement bar where you can also dine or stop by for a few Steins of beer or cocktails. We sat upstairs by the windows, perfect for lighting for the photos and also great for people watching!
Just in time for Oktoberfest, Herman Ze German has also extended their bier menu. After that large feast we didn’t have any room to try them but we’ll definitely be back!
We enjoyed a relaxing Sunday evening at Herman Ze German. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was good and filling and the prices were affordable. The perfect place for a taste of Germany in the heart of London.
