Heliot Steak House Review
Heliot Steak House, a hidden gem inside Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square.
Hippodrome Casino and Heliot Steak House is the perfect place for a taste of Vegas with Vegas style prices, USDA Prime steak and exquisite cocktails so you can gamble in style. But if gambling isn;t for you do what I did and sit back and relax with a cocktail. A Mocha Martini of course (the best in London, I swear!)
Hippodrome is centrally located above and opposite Leicester Square Underground station. We made our way in and was kindly lead up the stairs to Heliot Steak House (The T in Heliot is silent). The staff were very helpful and friendly, happy to show us around the casino, answer any questions we had and recommend their favourite dishes. The restaurant is located on a balcony overlooking the casino in a theatrical style setting and the theatre entrance is right across from the restaurant on the same floor. You can view their list of events here. Overlooking the casino is great fun! The restaurant is dimly lit with a romantic and glamorous look to it yet the prices are surprisingly affordable and do not match the five star look. We were so impressed that a few days we returned to Heliot Steak House with some friends. This time I decided to have a go at a bit of gambling and I won £27, not bad for only playing with £5!
We began as we intended to finish the night with cocktails. My guest and I both started with a fizz cocktail. Heliot Steakhouse has a large selection of cocktails which you can enjoy in the restaurant or bar for £10 each.
I went for Red Magic (left), a sweet concoction of Mandarine napoleon, strawberry puree & topped with scavi & ray prosecco. Karl had the Le Fizz, a delicious mixture of Grey Goose, st. germain, fresh lime juice topped with scavi & ray prosecco
For starter I had the Goats Curd Salad (£6), a generous helping of goats curd on a grilled aubergine. Very tasty and I didn’t feel as guilty indulging throughout the rest of the evening with this somewhat healthy treat.
My guest went for the Beef Tataki (£9). The Beef Tataki is USDA fillet in ponzu sauce and of course I had a taster. The Japanese dish is served as a cold appetiser, the meat was incredibly tender and just melted in my mouth we gave us great expectations for the USDA steak.
As Heliot specialises in steak I obviously couldn’t give that a miss! Heliot’s USDA Prime steak is from 3 year old grain fed beef. Less than 2% of beef in the US receives the Prime designation so you are in for a real treat at Heliot! I went for the Medium sized Sirloin (10.5oz) £16 and we shared a variety of sides including French fries and rosemary salt, Jersey royals (only in season until July) and then Chantenay carrots and maple syrup. I had a fried duck egg on my steak with garlic butter on the side. My guest had the 23oz T-Bone steak which comes with a King Prawn on top, courtesy of the chef. The steak was just as expected, tender and chargrilled with a great texture and the ducks egg was a lovely luxurious treat. Heliot Steak House is a fantastic place to if you are on a winning streak and there a dishes to suit every type of winner such as the Millionaire’s Mac & Cheese (£7) for those who are splashing out. I’m a bit gutted now that I didn’t go for it – it comes complete with truffle and duck egg! You can view the menu here. The bar and lounge is open 24 hours so there is also a 24 hour menu. This just makes it more tempting for a night hour in London, we now have the perfect foodie hangout as we wait for the 6am train home…
The best thing about exploring London is that I’m constantly finding new hangouts which all steal my heart for different reasons. Of course Heliot Steak House is known for its steak, which of course is divine. But the Mocha Martini (£6.50), well that was something else and I will keep returning just for another sip of that beauty. I opted for a couple of those martinis instead of the desserts.
And this is what I wore.
