The perfect after work hang out
Last week I headed across London to Harrild & Sons for an after work tipple. The bar is located just a short walk from Farringdon, Blackfriars of St Pauls stations, so it’s really easy to get to.
Harrild & Sons is a subterranean gem. On a Wednesday night it was absolutely packed – infact it was so busy we could hardly move or find our reserved table, this was obviously a good sign. If you are looking for good atmosphere, then this place is perfect.
We sat upstairs by the bar (which specialises in craft beer, specialist spirits and has an extensive wine list.) Cosy among the candle light, we enjoyed a few cocktails including Morning Dew (£9), a mix of Evan Williams Extra Aged, Fiorente Elderflower Liqueur, lemon juice, La Maison Fontaine Absinthe & egg white. Morning Dew has a tasty kick to it, which I assume was the absinthe, but it went down extremely well and if it wasn’t a school night I could have had quite a few! We also had the Rum Rebellion (£11), a fruity mix of Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum, Plantation 3 Star Rum, Smith & Cross Overproof Rum, Triple Sec, Kiwi & Mango Shrub. Then there was our favourite, Clover Club (£8.50) a beautiful concoction of East London Liquor Co London Dry Gin, lemon juice, egg white & raspberry syrup. This was very easy going for a Wednesday with a few nibbles. You can view the cocktail menu here. Harrild & Sons is an impressive and stylish gastro pub. It’s a must visit for cocktail and whisky connoisseurs.
These cocktails are all part of their menu for the downstairs cocktail bar 5cc. We did have a nosey downstairs at New York inspired cocktail den, which has a whisky focused menu from all around the world. It’s quirky and fun and if you are looking for a new cocktail place to try out then I cannot recommend enough. The cocktails were tasty and reasonably priced for the area.
To soak up the cocktails we ordered a few bar snacks to share including mini beef and chicken burgers (amazing), sweet potato fries (this bowl seemed never ending, it was incredible!) and our absolute favourite: goats cheese croquettes which were so so dreamy. The bar was originally the home of ‘Harrild & Sons’, who produced the printing machines used by the newspapers on nearby Fleet Street. It is located within a listed building which has now been restored as a modern pub with exposed brickwork and copper piping. The bar is filled with impressive, quirky Victoria style portraits, which have an eery twist to each one. Think skulls for faces – but I liked it and it was right up my street. The bar is cool and the fascinating artwork gives it a trendy and quirky edge, different to any other bar I’ve visited in London or in the area.
Harrild & Sons is open from 12pm Monday to Friday and is closed on weekends.
